Illogical behavior of the Israeli
By David Verveer
I am looking at the TV, listening to the radio, and do not believe my ears and eyes. We are gone crackers, what happened to us, did we loose the last bid of common sense we still had, after what happened to us in and around Lebanon, this year.
O.K. the war did not go too well, but we have to remember, against whom we fought. We fought against a few thousand terrorists, armed with the most modern weapons possible, fighting in guerrilla set-up, hiding behind civilian population, hurting us with bombardments of non navigational missiles, as they did not care who would be killed, Jew or Arab alike. In all Army Academic Institution, there is nobody who prepares a Chief of Staff, and / or prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, for this kind of war, and in my opinion, we were lucky, that it finished the way it did.
But what do we do, we start investigating who is to blame, just if this is important, instead of trying to prepare for the possible next fight with the same fanatics on the other side of the border. The experience gained in the last war, on all levels, is lost, because we sent home the people who learned the hard way, how to fight guerrilla and replace them with politicians who are the real cause of a weak army (by reducing funds for army and civil defense, by allowing the fanatic agitators getting the overhand, thus needing large army units spread elsewhere), or un-experienced new comers, who geared sufficient support, by claiming innocence.
The only purpose of attack by Hezbollah was to kidnap Israeli soldiers, in order to exchange them for prisoners in Israeli jails. A practice, just as old as war, practiced by Guerrillas worldwide, but what did we do, we responded with war, but the problem was, we could not find the enemy, as he was hiding in the villages of the civilian Lebanese . The only purpose of the enemy is to terrorize us, not to fight wars, and we play just in their hands. We start questioning who is to blame, who made wrong decisions, who had insufficient experience to fight Hezbollah, providing back benchers, shady politicians and yes-men, to get to rule in a non democratic manner, due to our perhaps not too efficient politicians, who are today in power, and who made faulty decisions in the heat of the fight. And remember, we elect our leaders in a democratic way, and send them to rule, taking into account that they are human too and might make mistakes.
But, as mentioned before, the final outcome of the war was much better than could be expected from our amateurish conflict, as we gained world support, we removed the Hezbollah from the border, we got U.N soldiers on the Lebanese side of the border, and it made us realize, that we have to look for more efficient ways to fight terrorists. But instead of gearing for improvement of our performance, we start ousting the democratic elected leaders because the threat of getting thousands of demonstrators shouting political slogans (in the genre that toppled the Shah in Iran, with only 20,000 students or brought Hitler to power)..
In my opinion, we, the people have the civil right to decide every 4 or less years, who will represent them, who will defend them and rule our country, demonstrations or public opinions (propagated by a non neutral media), are allowed to influence our representatives, but most certainly not replace them with un-democratic measures. 10,000 young people (generally children and hot heads, with foam dripping from the lips), demonstrating in Rabin square, are tools in the hand of people like Uzi Dayan, who never succeeded in getting elected, or Bibi, using all means to get back in saddle.
People cool down, your democratic change will come soon enough, as most Governments don’t last more than 2 and a half years, hoping that the next combination of politicians, will provide us a better future, having to deal with problems, not related to war, such as our poor, our elders, our ill people, our education and our welfare, without need to cut back, because we have to fight our never ending wars with our neighbors.
